About Us
Our Mission
To improve the quality of life in the Hawthorne
neighborhood through empowering the residents in order that they can
address the physical, cultural, social, and economic needs of the
community.
With over 6,000 residents, the Hawthorne neighborhood
features a diverse mixture of residential properties as well as retail,
light industrial and non-profit organizations. The Hawthorne
neighborhood is the home to the Nellie Stone Johnson School as well as
Farview Park, the oldest park in Minneapolis.
The Hawthorne Area Community Council has been in
operation for over 30 years to meet the diverse needs of its residents,
assisting in issues of housing development, the environment, crime and
safety as well as business and economic development.
The Staff
Communications Director: Bryan Thao Worra
Writer and community activist Bryan Thao Worra brings nearly a decade
of experience working with
historically underserved communities, including refugees, immigrants
and migrants to assist diverse communities in achieving social,
economic and political self-sufficiency, education and civic
engagement. He has worked with Hmong National Development, Little
Brothers Friends of the Elderly, The National Youth Leadership
Council, Asian Media Access and other non-profit organizations across
the country.
Housing Director: Jeff Skrenes
Jeff Skrenes is working with the Hawthorne Area Community Council to address what's happening
in our neighborhood to put an end to predatory lending and foreclosures in order to keep our
community strong and growing. Jeff most recently worked with the non-profit housing advocates of
ACORN as an organizer against predatory lending. He also has experience as a loan counselor for
ACORN and prior to that has he was a mortgage originator for six years and knows the field well.
Office Manager: Kathy Welch
Office manager Kathy Welch brings extensive experience to the Hawthorne
Area Community Council. A long-time resident and community activist,
Welch has provided extensive support throughout the community assisting
residents, businesses and non-profit organizations in establishing
effective dialogues to promote key changes that empower the residents
to meet the physical, cultural, social and economic needs of the
community.
